Sunderland matchday, fan first

Everything for a day on Wearside: who Sunderland are, what the Black Cats have won, how tickets work, where you sit at the Stadium of Light, how to get there on the Metro, and what to do before and after the game. The ground sits on the old Wearmouth Colliery pit, so the build-up runs through Monkwearmouth and the city centre across the river. Home fans can lean into the Colliery Tavern and the walk over Wearmouth Bridge; away fans are best settling in the city centre and taking the Metro to Stadium of Light or St Peter's; anyone wanting a proper meal, a hotel, or a seafront afternoon gets more choice in the city centre and out at Roker and Seaburn.

Club facts and honours

Sunderland AFC was founded in 1879 and built one of English football's strongest North East supporter cultures on Wearside. The club won six top-flight league titles in its early decades and two FA Cups (1937 and 1973), then spent recent years moving between divisions before the 2025 Championship play-off win returned them to the Premier League.

Tickets and stadium map

The Stadium of Light sits on the north bank of the River Wear in Monkwearmouth, built on the site of the former Wearmouth Colliery, which closed in December 1993. A sculpture of a Davy miners' lamp, by Jim Roberts, stands at the stadium entrance to mark the pit-and-shipyard heritage the ground was named for. The pitch sits several metres below the level of the surrounding ground.

Sunderland sell home tickets through the official eticketing portal, with priority windows for season-card holders and members before general sale. Demand has risen sharply since promotion, so membership, priority and any ballot rules should be checked fixture by fixture on the official ticket pages. Use the official SAFC ticket pages and eticketing portal only. Do not promise availability, price, seat location or away allocation; Premier League fixtures sell out fast and on-sale windows move per game.

Ticketing rules to show clearly

  • Unauthorised resale of football tickets is an offence under Section 166 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994; buy only through official channels.

Food, drink and nights out

Option rows, not a single winner — different lanes for different fans.

near ground drink · home fan

The Colliery Tavern

walkable to stadium · home · budget

Closest pub to the ground at Monkwearmouth, the classic home-fan pre-match base.

On Southwick Road barely a couple of hundred metres from the turnstiles, with football on the TVs pre-match and a marquee outside on busy matchdays. Largely a home-fans pub.

keep with caveat: Strong location and home-fan ritual value with two independent matchday-pub sources. It is a home-fans pub, not an away-safe listing.

near ground drink

The Wheatsheaf

walkable to stadium · neutral · budget

Recently refurbished pub a short walk up Roker Avenue, a more neutral option away from the main crowds.

Independent pub guides describe it as recently refurbished and a reasonable, more relaxed choice that admits away fans.

keep with caveat: Useful nearer-ground option with two matchday-pub sources; described as more neutral, but away-fan admission still varies fixture to fixture.

city centre drink · city centre food

The Dun Cow

city centre · neutral · mid range

Grade II-listed city-centre pub on High Street West, a short walk over Wearmouth Bridge from the ground.

Independent guides flag hearty pub food and a strong matchday atmosphere in a heritage Edwardian interior.

keep with caveat: Good city-centre matchday pub with food, backed by a matchday-pub guide and a local destination listing. City-centre crossing, not a near-ground row.

city centre food · city centre drink · family

The Engine Room (The Fire Station)

city centre · neutral · mid range

Casual city-centre food and drink in the restored Fire Station building, good for groups before the Metro to the ground.

Burgers, pizzas and a lively atmosphere inside the Fire Station entertainment venue on High Street West.

keep with caveat: Solid group/family city-centre option with a matchday-food guide and local destination coverage; casual rather than a destination restaurant.

Sheepfolds Stables

walkable to stadium · neutral · mixed

Food, drink and events courtyard at Riverside Sunderland, close to the Stadium of Light and useful for groups who want choice without going deep into the city centre.

Official operator list includes bars, pizza, burgers, Asian small plates, coffee and regional comfort food; treat individual traders as current-check items.

keep with caveat: Official site gives current operator mix and hours for key bars/restaurants; Tripadvisor and MySunderland provide independent/local context. It is a genuine named near-ground food, drink and entertainment option.

city centre drink · city centre food

The Ship Isis

city centre · neutral · mid range

Restored Victorian pub on Silksworth Row, one of the highest-rated pubs in the city for a pre-match pint.

Real-ale-led pub with food, praised in local coverage for its restored interior.

keep with caveat: Strong-reputation city-centre pub with a matchday guide and local listing; quieter ale-house feel rather than a big matchday boozer.

seafront food · night out

Six (Roker)

seafront · neutral · mid range

Stylish Roker seafront restaurant for a proper meal away from the matchday crush.

One of the seafront's most stylish rooms, known for cheeseboards and small plates with sea views, a short Metro or taxi hop from the ground.

keep with caveat: Good seafront sit-down option with a local Echo feature and Tripadvisor coverage; seafront, so factor in travel time to the ground.

seafront food · family

The Salt House Kitchen (Seaburn)

seafront · neutral · mid range

Seaburn-beach restaurant for a relaxed weekend meal with a view before or after the game.

British pub cuisine with international influences and stunning views over Seaburn Beach, a few minutes by Metro from the city centre.

keep with caveat: Good seafront family option with local Echo coverage and Tripadvisor signal; out at Seaburn, so plan transport to the ground.

near ground food · home fan · away fan

Stadium of Light concourses

at stadium · neutral · unknown

Practical fallback food inside the ground if time is tight.

Concourse kiosks serve standard matchday fare; menus and payment methods change by season.

keep with caveat: Convenience fallback only; keep as a practical in-ground row but do not present stadium concourse food as a top Sunderland food option.

Itineraries

Home fan: city to Stadium of Light ritual

  1. Eat or have a pre-match pint in the city centre (The Dun Cow, The Ship Isis or the Fire Station) if you want choice.
  2. Walk over Wearmouth Bridge or take the Metro one stop to Stadium of Light or St Peter's.
  3. Use The Colliery Tavern at Monkwearmouth for the near-ground build-up.
  4. Go in early for the warm-up and the Davy lamp monument at the entrance.

Use official travel timings; keep the near-ground pub language home-fan only.

Away fan: practical and low-risk

  1. Eat and drink in Sunderland city centre before travelling, where most away-friendly pubs are.
  2. Take the Metro to Stadium of Light or St Peter's rather than assuming pubs by the ground.
  3. Use the North Stand Upper away section as allocated by your club's away-ticket guidance.
  4. Check the latest away guidance for fixture-specific restrictions and travel.

Safety-sensitive. Do not publish near-ground pub recommendations for away fans without current official support.

Food-first Wearside matchday

  1. Pick a lane: the Fire Station's Engine Room for casual group food, The Dun Cow for a heritage pub meal, or Six and the Salt House Kitchen out at Roker/Seaburn for a proper sit-down with a view.
  2. Leave time for the Metro or the 15-minute walk from the city centre to the ground.
  3. Use the stadium concourse only as the fallback, not the main plan.

Venue hours and bookings still need a final current check.

Football plus a Wearside weekend

  1. Book the Hilton Garden Inn for near-ground convenience, a city-centre hotel for food and rail, or a Roker seafront base for the coast.
  2. Add Roker and Seaburn beaches, the seafront restaurants, or the National Glass Centre area if staying over.
  3. Use the Metro or taxis for late movement rather than walking back across the river at night.

Needs current opening-hours and availability checks before production.

QA holds before publishing

  • Re-check ticketing, membership, ballot and away-allocation details each season and before fixture-specific copy.
  • Do not promise ticket availability, prices, ballot success or hotel availability.
  • Link to official stadium maps/seating diagrams unless image/map reuse rights are explicit.
  • Keep current capacity and any future expansion separate; redevelopment claims need date/source labels.
  • Use official honours rows; keep the six First Division titles and two FA Cups exact, and label the 2025 play-off promotion clearly.
  • Confirm current division each season: Sunderland are in the 2026-27 Premier League with Europa League football after finishing 7th in 2025-26.
  • History and rivalry copy needs neutral sourcing; keep the Tyne-Wear derby football-only.
  • Re-check the matchday and away guidance before publishing each season.
  • Treat stadium menus, opening hours, hotel availability and seafront venue listings as non-stable.
  • Do not publish a single best restaurant; publish options by fan intent, food type, area, budget and home/away fit.
  • Do not list near-ground pubs as away-safe unless the current official guide supports it.
  • Keep all fan videos as leads until permission/embed/use terms are cleared.
  • Keep image rows as candidates until attribution and share-alike handling are accepted site-wide.
  • No tune/source-work leakage, no false club affiliation, and no claim that FanChants records inside stadiums.
