RB Leipzig date to July 2009, when Red Bull bought the playing licence of fifth-tier SSV Markranstadt and renamed the side RasenBallsport Leipzig. The club climbed from the fifth tier to the Bundesliga in seven seasons, reaching the top flight in 2016, and has been a regular in European competition since.
