Newcastle United matchday, fan first

This page covers the whole Newcastle United fan journey: who the club are, what they have won, how tickets actually work, where fans sit, how to get to St James' Park, and what to do around Newcastle before and after the match. St James' Park sits in the city centre, so almost everything useful (pubs, food, hotels, nightlife) is within walking distance of the turnstiles. Home fans can lean into the Strawberry pub, Shearer's Bar and the Gallowgate atmosphere; away fans should use official away-fan guidance and the Leazes Stand allocation; anyone planning food, a city-centre night out, or a hotel gets a wider set of options along the Quayside, Grey Street and around the Central Station.

Club facts and honours

Newcastle United was formed in 1892 from the merger of Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End. The club's most successful era came in the Edwardian period: three First Division titles between 1905 and 1909 and six FA Cups between 1910 and 1955. After decades without a major domestic trophy, the club won the Carabao Cup in March 2025, beating Liverpool 2-1 at Wembley to end a 70-year domestic trophy drought.

The Strawberry

walkable to stadium · home · mid range

The iconic home-fan matchday pub directly adjacent to St James' Park near the Gallowgate End. Covered in signed shirts and NUFC memorabilia; the Toon's equivalent of The Old Peacock at Elland Road.

Real ales on tap; the venue fills extremely early on matchdays — arrive at least 2 hours before kick-off for a chance of getting in.

keep with caveat: Strong matchday ritual and location value for home fans; multiple independent pub guides confirm it. Not recommended as an away-fan listing.

Shearer's Bar (Gallowgate Stand)

at stadium · neutral · mid range

External club bar beneath the Gallowgate Stand, next to the retail store. The club says it is open to all supporters and members of the public.

Official Newcastle United pages describe it as a sports bar and lounge at the Gallowgate end of St James' Park. Still re-check fixture-specific restrictions before high-risk matches.

keep with caveat: Official Newcastle United around-the-ground guidance says Shearer's Bar is open to all supporters and members of the public; independent away-guide coverage supports the practical matchday role.

Grainger Market

Covered Victorian market on Grainger Street, a short walk from the stadium. Good daytime food option before heading to St James' Park.

Grainger Market includes artisan bakers, green grocers, street food traders, coffee shops and cafes. Pumphreys Coffee has been roasting in Newcastle since 1750. Multiple international food traders including Asian-fusion and Cuban street food.

keep with caveat: Good daytime budget/casual option with official market site and destination tourist guides supporting it. Check opening hours for evening kickoffs — market closes around 5.30pm Monday to Saturday.

Quayside

nightlife district · neutral · mixed

Newcastle's Quayside along the River Tyne is 10–15 minutes on foot from St James' Park and is the more upscale of the two main post-match pub/bar districts. Away fans are generally comfortable here.

Multiple bars and restaurants along the river; regarded by fan guides as welcoming to visiting supporters. Akenside Traders listed as a specific option with large screens.

keep with caveat: Consistent independent signal from multiple matchday guides for away-friendly atmosphere. Individual venues within the Quayside area still need current checks.

Bigg Market area

nightlife district · home · budget

Lively post-match pub and bar district a short walk from the ground; Collingwood Street runs through the same area. Described as rougher than the Quayside — better suited to home fans comfortable in a livelier environment.

Dense cluster of bars and late-night venues; good post-match atmosphere but can be rowdy.

keep with caveat: Multiple matchday guides cover this area; signal is consistent that it is more home-fan oriented. Frame as a lively post-match option, not a quiet meal.

Grey Street and Collingwood Street

city centre · neutral · mid range

Grey Street is one of Newcastle's most architecturally notable streets and hosts restaurants and bars popular for both pre and post-match. Collingwood Street is the cocktail-bar hub known as 'the Diamond Strip'.

Grey Street runs through the heart of the city and is within 10 minutes' walk of St James' Park. Upscale bar and cocktail options on Collingwood Street for the post-match night-out crowd.

keep with caveat: Good district-level city centre coverage from destination guides. Individual bars need current checks before recommending a specific door.

Chinatown / Stowell Street

city centre · neutral · mid range

Newcastle's Chinatown on Stowell Street is a short walk from St James' Park (under 10 minutes) and is a popular pre-match food option for fans wanting a sit-down meal.

Newcastle's Chinatown has multiple Chinese restaurants clustered on Stowell Street. Good for groups and family visits before the ground.

keep with caveat: Consistent destination-guide coverage of Stowell Street Chinatown. Individual restaurant quality varies; recommend the area, not a single establishment.

Monument area (food and pubs)

city centre · neutral · mixed

The Monument Metro interchange is the central transport hub of Newcastle, minutes from St James' Park. The surrounding area has the widest range of casual food and drink options for pre-match, with something for all budgets.

Full range of chains, cafes and independent eateries concentrated around Grey's Monument and the Grainger Town area. Practical staging point for any fan type before heading to the ground.

keep with caveat: Broad district-level utility for practical pre-match logistics. Not a single-venue recommendation.

walkable to stadium · neutral · mid range

Container market near the Gallowgate End with street food traders and bars. Noted by multiple guides as a pre-match option close to the ground.

Shipping-container street food and bar complex. One review notes it as noisy late into the evening — not suitable if a quiet stay nearby is needed.

keep with caveat: Mentioned in multiple matchday guides; independent source is a hotel review rather than a dedicated food guide. Needs a direct venue source.

Quayside pub noted in multiple Newcastle food and drink guides for real ale and pub food.

Direct venue source, Live Theatre, and Top 50 Gastropubs all support the real-ale plus proper pub-food angle.

keep with caveat: Direct venue page plus independent food/pub-guide coverage. Stronger as a food-and-real-ale option than as a loud football pub.

Itineraries

Home fan: city centre to St James' Park ritual

  1. Eat in the city centre — Grainger Market, Chinatown on Stowell Street, or Grey Street for wider choice.
  2. Call into the Strawberry, Shearer's Bar or a Monument-area pub for the pre-match hour.
  3. Walk to St James' Park — the ground is visible from most of the city centre and the walk is part of the ritual.
  4. Get in early for the warm-up; the Gallowgate and Leazes Ends generate the loudest noise before kick-off.

Use official travel guidance. Keep pub language home-fan only for pubs near the ground.

Away fan: practical and low-risk

  1. Take the Metro to Monument or St James' station — Central Station is ten minutes' walk from the ground.
  2. Use the Quayside or Grey Street for food and drink before the match; both areas are noted in visitor guides as welcoming to away fans.
  3. Head to turnstiles 91–94 in the Leazes Stand. Your access number is printed on your ticket. Turnstiles open 90 minutes before kick-off.
  4. Check the official Newcastle United away supporters guide before each fixture for any fixture-specific restrictions.

Safety-sensitive. Always link to the official away guide. Do not recommend ground-adjacent pubs for away fans without current official support.

Food-first Newcastle matchday

  1. For a quick, casual pre-match: Grainger Market (daytime, closes ~5.30pm) or Stowell Street Chinatown for a sit-down meal.
  2. For something more neighbourhood: Grey Street and Collingwood Street have the best range of independent restaurants close to the ground.
  3. Leave enough time — St James' Park is walkable from everywhere in the city centre, but allow 15–20 minutes from the station area.

Venue hours need a current check before publishing.

Football plus a Newcastle night out

  1. Book a city-centre or Quayside hotel if the evening matters as much as the match.
  2. Post-match: the Quayside is the most visitor-friendly stretch — bars and restaurants along the river; Grey Street and Collingwood Street for cocktails.
  3. For late-night: Bigg Market is livelier and rougher; Quayside is the calmer choice.
  4. Use taxis or the Metro for late-night travel back to the station or hotel rather than walking long distances.

Needs current opening-hours and event check before production.

Family and tourist Newcastle day

  1. Visit the club shop or take in the Shearer and Milburn statues outside St James' Park before the match.
  2. Add the Discovery Museum, Life Science Centre or Great North Museum if staying in the city.
  3. Grainger Market is the best flexible daytime food stop for families before heading to the ground.
  4. Use the Metro — St James' station is the most direct for families arriving by Metro.

Check matchday shop hours and attraction booking requirements.
